The Nude in Charcoal and Chalk is a three-week class that focuses on a tonal approach to figure drawing, prioritizing the representation of light and shadow to create the illusion of depth and form. Students will employ values, measurement, proportion, and gesture to ensure their drawings capture the individuality of the live figure model. Oil Painting 101 explores the fundamentals of oil painting. Beginning with a lecture on canvases, brushes, mediums, and pigments, the instructor will guide students through a step-by-step, logical method of oil painting inspired by historical practices, utilizing a limited color palette and a simple, manageable still-life setup. Oil Painting 102 is a survey of different oil painting subjects taught at Scottsdale Artists’ School: still-life, landscape, portraiture, and figure. Each session will begin with a demonstration, followed by hands-on practice by the students and personalized critiques from the instructor. Oil Painting 101 is not a prerequisite for this class. Oil Painting 103 is designed for students who have taken Oil Painting 101 and 102 as well as for oil painters who have a grasp of the fundamentals but desire assistance in pinpointing opportunities for artistic growth. Students will work on a subject of their own choosing (still-life, landscape, or portrait) throughout the month, working alongside the instructor while he offers one-on-one instruction and guidance. Emphasis will be on composition and balancing representational accuracy with expression. Oil Painting 101 and Oil Painting 102 are not prerequisites for this class.
